Unlike many celebrity-backed spirits, Silver Belly was not created as a branding exercise. Mattie emphasized that authenticity is central to the business. Her father’s involvement is personal and intentional: he tastes and approves every batch, ensuring the whiskey reflects what he genuinely enjoys drinking at home. “We want to make real Tennessee whiskey that tastes like what Dad drinks,” she said, while remaining affordable for the everyday fans who have always supported him.
Mattie’s journey, however, has not been without profound loss. At 28, she lost her first husband in a tragic accident, an experience that reshaped her life. Writing became her way to grieve, heal, and search for meaning. What began as private journaling evolved into two books, including Lemons on Friday, which chronicles her path through grief and faith. Though she never intended to write about becoming a young widow, Mattie found purpose in sharing her story to help others feel less alone.
Navigating life under a famous last name has come with its challenges. Early on, Mattie wanted to step away from the spotlight entirely. Over time, she learned to embrace the opportunities her family name provided—while recognizing that credibility comes from preparation and hard work. “If a door opens, step through it,” she said, “but be ready to do the work.”
