She remembers conversations, private rooms, family moments, disagreements, laughter and the complicated reality that existed after the stage lights disappeared. To millions of fans, Elvis remains the King. To Priscilla, however, there was once simply a man she knew intimately, a young father whose enormous public life existed alongside a far more private family story.
Standing beside her is Riley Keough, Elvis Presley’s granddaughter and the daughter of Lisa Marie Presley. Riley belongs to a generation that inherited Elvis largely through stories, recordings, photographs and the enormous cultural shadow surrounding Graceland. Yet her relationship to that history is anything but distant. Elvis was her grandfather. Lisa Marie, his only child, was her mother. Elvis possessed a voice and presence that belonged uniquely to him, and no tribute could recreate the precise electricity that happened when he stepped in front of an audience. Then comes a photograph of Elvis holding Lisa Marie, and the atmosphere inside the room seems to change.
For Riley, that photograph carries two losses at once.
Her grandfather died in 1977, decades before she was born, but her mother lived with that loss throughout her own life. When Lisa Marie Presley died in 2023, Riley became one of the people responsible for carrying forward not just Elvis’s legacy but her mother’s memories of him as well. She later completed Lisa Marie’s memoir from recordings and material her mother had left behind, helping preserve a deeply personal perspective on the Presley family for another generation. Graceland itself described Riley’s work on the memoir as fulfilling her mother’s wish to share her story.
